Step 3: Introduction

The facilitator sets ground rules and gives directions to the game with the sheets with privileges and a stack of scrap paper near them.

Example:

Before we get started, I would like to set some ground rules so we can all engage in open and productive dialogue with each other where everyone feels supported and respected.

  1. Be reflective. Consider the impact of your words, and how they might affect your peers.
  2. Take turns, allow everyone a moment to speak, and try not to disrupt others.
  3. Express disagreement in a respectful manner (do not attack the person, discuss the ideas).

Do you have a suggestion for additional rules that can promote open and productive discussion?

On to the exercise: Here is a list of privileges, for the purpose of this activity, you do not have any of these privileges. We have removed you of all these privileges and you, as a group, need to buy them back from us. Each privilege costs €100. I am coming around in a moment to hand out this sheet with privileges to you and give an amount of money to each group. That is the amount of money that you as a group must spend to buy privileges. I will give you 15 minutes to discuss the privileges and decide on what privileges you would like to buy. After we are going to come back to the full group and debrief.
