Activity 15: Is It Micro-aggression?

Overview and Learning Objectives: Increase awareness on micro-aggressions and facilitate conversations about their underlying meanings and effects.

Duration: 60 to 70minutes.

Group size: Minimum 2 teams of 4 people.

Materials:

  1. Three poster boards, each listing a different form of micro-aggression and their definitions (microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations), and one titled not micro-aggression.
  2. Multiple sets of index cards ® different colored index cards for each group (easy to see where cards are allocated by team). Statements should be the same in every set.

Preparation: Create examples micro aggressive and not micro aggressive statements. It is important to have explanations ready as to why each comment is or isn’t a micro-aggression. The examples can be created based on the context. Prepare the four poster boards and write the statements on the sets of color index cards.
