Step 2: Draw a Card (round 1)

The facilitator walks past each group and lets them pick a card (they can’t see what’s on the card). Then they offer them a handout with the questions the group can discuss. One person writes down the answers so they can be shared during the reflection. The facilitator keeps making rounds to provide stereotypes if the participants fail to come up with their own or don’t feel comfortable bringing them up (see handout for the facilitator). 10 minutes is given to this part of the exercise, the facilitator will announce when time is up and for the group to move to the next step.

  1. Describe the person on the card.
  2. What are stereotypes (positive and negative) that you know of associated with the person on this card based on what you can see and not see about them?
  3. What are these stereotypes based on?
  4. Do these stereotypes result from specific intersections in the person’s identity?
  5. How are people who belong to these groups presented in the media?
  6. How does it affect people’s attitude and behavior towards them?
  7. How could these stereotypes harm the person on the card? Think small and big.
