Step 3: Discussion & Reflection

The participants move into a big circle. The facilitator asks the participants to provide their answers per given phrase. They can also ask how the participants came to their conclusion (15 minutes).

After the discussion round, the facilitator poses reflective questions (if the questions have not been answered intuitively yet, or not every participant has gotten a turn yet) to find out how this training impacted the participants (15 minutes).

Reflect on:

  1. What did you think of the exercise?
  2. Which phrase stood out the most to you, and why?
  3. A micro-aggression is not as noticeable as getting punched in the face. So, what makes it harmful?
  4. People who have experienced a micro-aggression are often told to “not make a big deal of it, and to let it go.” Do you agree or disagree with this?
  5. What have you learned from this exercise? What do you hope to do differently in the future?
  6. What did you learn or notice within yourself (thoughts, feelings, etc.) while doing the exercise?
  7. How does this exercise and what you are learning from this exercise translate into your professional and/or personal life?
